Atlantic Trail - cycle parking

This page is an initial attempt to list cycle parking stands & racks in the Bude area.

At present, each location is described and a What3Words address link is given; it is hoped to provide a map in due course.

Parkhouse standSmall images are provided for most of the stands.   This may help in deciding whether the stand is suitable* for securing your bike.

* Some of the stands provided by facilities/shops in Bude are racks that just hold one wheel to keep the bike upright, rather than large stands; such racks make it less easy to secure the frame and both wheels unless you have a very long cable/chain lock.

cycleway start The list is split into three sections - public cycle stands provided by the Local Authority,   stands outside major stores or facilities,   and stands provided outside or in the grounds of other facilities/shops.
It can probably be assumed that the latter are provided for staff or clients of that facility/shop (rather than as publicly available cycle parking); however those stands are included here as knowledge of their existance may assist those wishing to visit that facility/shop by bike.

Responsible cycle parking

Other than stands, there are many places where you can lean your bike, or chain it to fixed objects.
Crooklets railings
The railings at the edge of the beach in front of the cafe at Crooklets beach are one often-used such location (there, the railings are adequately distant from the nearby picnic benches for such parking not to be an obstruction).

However, if you do leave your bike anywhere, please ensure it is not in a place where it will inconvenience other users of that location.   This is particularly important on narrow footways where a parked bike might obstruct a blind or disabled person.

Securing your bike to an object close to the kerb (eg a street sign) runs the risk of it obstructing the doors of parked cars or, worse, preventing someone easily crossing the road at that point.

Please also be aware that leaving your bike where someone can inadvertently bump into it, and knock it over, risks damage to your bike and possibly to passers-by.   This is, unfortunately, more likely nowadays, now that so many pedestrians are gazing at their smartphone (rather than obeying the Highway Code and paying care to other walkway users).

How to use what3words

What3words is a geocode system designed to identify any location to a resolution of about 3 metres.

Clicking any of the What3words links (given above) will open a What3words webpage showing the location on a Google map in 'outline' view.
satellite view You can swop to 'satellite' view by clicking the small round 'satellite-view' icon in the botton right-hand corner of the map.
You can zoom in or out using the '+' or '-', and can drag the map in any direction.

There is also a smartphone 'What3words' App that will pinpoint the location on a map if you provide the three words.

Start of cycleway Alternatively, you can get the map for the relevant three words direct from the internet.   Just type into your browser   https://what3words.com/   followed by the three words (separated by full stops).
As an example   https://what3words.com/alcove.knee.should   will call up a map showing the location of the cycle stands at the start of Bude cycleway near the Tourist Information Centre.
